Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) was established in Ibadan, Oyo State on 1st December, 1964 as a successor autonomous research organization to the Nigerian Substation of the defunct West African Cocoa Research Institute (WACRI) by Nigeria Statute, Act No. 6 of 1950. The then WACRI which was established in 1944 with headquarters at Tafo, Ghana had responsibility to conduct research to facilitate improved production of disease-free, or disease-resistant cocoa.  Following the Nigerian Research Institutes Act No.33 of 1964, the scope of CRIN was expanded beyond that of WACRI to include research on kola and coffee in addition to cocoa.  Subsequently, in 1975, the scope of CRIN research activities was further broadened to include cashew and tea by the Agricultural Research Institutes Order No. 107 under the Agricultural Research Institutes Decree No. 35 of 1973. Consequently, CRIN now has the mandate to conduct research on five crops, namely: Cocoa, Kola, Coffee, Cashew and Tea throughout the country.
In order to effectively facilitate the institutes outreach to the farmers across the country, six sites each were established as substation and experimental station in locations where these mandate crops are cultivated economically. These stations are sustained by CRIN. The substations and the crops they are established for are as follows: Owena (Ondo State) – cocoa, robusta coffee and kola; Uhonmora (Edo State) – cocoa; Ochaja (Kogi State) – cashew and kola; Ibeku (Abia State) – cocoa and cashew; Ajassor (Cross River State) – cocoa and kola and Kusuku-Mambilla (Taraba State) – Arabica coffee and tea. Each of the experimental stations also caters for different crops. The crops are positioned as follows: Okondi (Cross River State) – robusta coffee; Mayo-selbe (Taraba State) – cocoa and robusta coffee, Ibule (Ondo State) cocoa; Kabba (Kogi State) – robusta coffee, Ugbenu (Anambra State) – cashew, and Onisere (Ondo State) – cocoa.
