The Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR) Zaria in conjunction with the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN) today held a press conference at the Council’s Conference hall on the approval for the open cultivation of Tela Maize in Nigeria.
Delivering his welcome remarks, the Executive Secretary of ARCN Prof. Garba Hamidu Sharubutu mni welcome everyone to the press conference and added that research output has been very imperative in the recent past. He however noted that researches are now demand driven and that very shortly if farmers are in tune with the progress being made through research, we are sure that food shortage will become a thing of the past.
He concluded by imploring members of the press to keep on doing what they have been doing by continuing to work together with us for the progress of research in the country.
The ED of IAR, Zaria Prof. Ishiyaku Mohammed at this point delivered his speech by explaining the various advantages to be derived from the new maize variety which includes high yield, same nutritional value and so on. He however allayed fears that efforts will be put in place to avoid situations of adulterating it as well as ensure the availability of the new maize variety in the market through specific sales outlets while noting that so far there is no harmful side effects on its consumption.
